Lucania Film School is a main theme itinerant project for the study and the research on the audiovisual languages. It is a derivation of the activities held by the inside of the first Basilicata cinema festival, the Lucania Film Festival. Artists, researchers, professionals and employees work in a not hierarchical but horizontal organization, where they become the authors of a series of analysis on the need of re-interpreting their own knowledge and discover the mutable sceneries in the unknown quantity of the “research”. The Lucania Film School intends to find out the contemporary phenomenons that influence the communicative forms to build structures ad hoc and flexible models, by personalizing the action calibre.

Campus MadesudeMagia
Headquarters: Matera - Pisticci
Excursions headquarters: Colobraro, Valsinni, Viggiano, Aliano…
Period: 13th of June / 19th of July 2005

The I° Campus of Basilicata cinema and audiovisual arts has the goal of forming a high sensitivity in young students as to carry out the practices of the audiovisual. With reference to this, the Campus sets up its main theme address as an updated rethinking of the Lucania popular beliefs, with a more careful attention to the topic of the ceremonial magic, which had been already at the core of the ethnographic expeditions led by Ernesto De Martino in the 50’s. The aims of the Campus formative activities are marked by two different attention centres: the first is the main theme one, which expresses the selected cultural address and determinates the fields in which the study work will be carried out, the second, instead, is constituted by a wide formative experience with reference to the languages of the social representation and documentation which need to be managed in conditions of absolute care and awareness (both from the “scientific” and creative standpoints).

The use of digital technologies will feature the work in its different representative and expressive aspects, looking carefully on each one. Such a path mainly turns to students who have a good knowledge of the mentioned aspects, both the ones related to cultural anthropology and the languages of the cinematic and audiovisual representation. The I° Campus of cinematic arts intends to become, year by year, an important reference point in the formative regional panorama, by facing, from time to time, basic themes of research fields tightly connected to the history, the culture, the traditions, the environment, and the whole Lucania society which is represented in the set up audiovisual products.

Training for the trainers: the Cinema in the primary schools
Headquarters: Pisticci-Policoro-Potenza
Period: January / February '06

Cinematic course for the primary school teachers of Basilicata region who intend to activate some courses of audiovisual language in their schools. Our everyday life is featured by an abundant quantity of audiovisual mass media. That’s the reason why we wonder why the Italian school does not pay them the deserved regard. There are some basic reasons: the images on the go, which present themselves like self-evident, they hide, in some way, their nature of languages, that’s why we apparently don’t need to learn the codes by pattern processes. Besides this, cinema and television are still taken like diversion tools. On the other hand, Italian school has always been looking on cinema with suspect, but fortunately it hasn’t been the same for teachers: they have been encouraging the entry of cinema in schools, for instance through the classic cineforum. They have often been using movies as subsidy and as support of history, literature, and science lessons, for facing transversal basic themes like the interculture, the legality, the tolerance. The sharpest ones, however, have felt the need of facing the movie like autonomous form of art, with its own history and its own language.

And it’s from this need that the project of training the trainers took life. A range of modules are supposed to be imparted to trainers, that are the teachers. Modules for literacy on the cinematic languages with the intent of activating audiovisual language courses (production of film products) in their schools.
