In August 1998, Ecolammia was organised under the arcs of the "promenade" of the Terravecchia in Pisticci. It was one of the first regional events of ecologist background organized by a cultural association such as Allelammie. The subject was the legal and unauthorized scrap-yards disseminated in the area of the Calanchi. A real dossier was introduced that had the worth of waking up all the pisticcesi sleeping consciences. There weren’t any doubts on the very degraded estate of a wide part of the territory. But the community didn't seem to mind it. The sensibility toward the environmental subjects was scarce and relegated to individual initiatives.
Year by year, what seemed to be an isolated case appeared, unfortunately, as one of the several environmental emergencies that upset the serene life of the pisticcesi, of the lucani. In fact a series of environmental troubles have inevitably brought the citizens to defend their own health, their own environment. Here is the "Ionian coast" which is subject to a rude cementing process; the Mega-power station in Valbasento, a threat, still today, that could mean the definitive environmental death of a huge part of territory of Matera province; Tecnoparco, a heavy tribute in environmental terms that we keep paying ; the deposit of radioactive wastes in Scanzano Jonico which brought to a historian mobilization of the Lucania. And more: the toxic stems in the bosco del Lavandaio, the buried radioactive wastes, who knows where, in the Calanchi. And still... In all these years, we have been defending our future and the one of the generations to come, the survival of our territory. Allelammie was present. We were on the first line. But we are afraid of still being there, in the future.
However our hope and engagement is making the so-called ecological conscience of the citizens, the Communities, the Institutions grow up, with the necessity to pursue, in the future, an authentically sustainable development. A development able to conjugate the socio-economic growth and the respect for the environment.
